You need to understand that selling fan art, whether you can get away with it at a trade show, on your website, or without getting a cease and desist, is not a good idea. The reason the selling of fanart is illegal is so copyright holders can prevent their creations being used in ways that they don't approve or without their approval. Fan art is any artwork on any medium (digital and physical products) that features characters or scenery not originally invented or created by the artist selling the artwork.

It would be the opinion of the organization for transformative works that unpaid fanart is generally fair use, and i'd generally agree with them.

They are looking for illegal fanarts and giving the orders to the artist to stop or they will be sued. Yes it is illegal unless you have artist legit permission to not only make but sell, by giving them set number of percentage to them. I know selling prints of fan art has been discussed many times here, but i'm strictly talking about someone commissioning an image featuring a i think selling prints of fanart is illegal as well, but again, i doubt the original company cares *that* much? Unless it is fair use or commentary, you cannot do it.
